The Male and The Female Gaze

This body of work explores the concepts of the male and female gaze, and the ways we’re taught to see gender through specific visual cues. I wanted to question why we associate certain aesthetics with masculinity or femininity, and where those ideas come from.

Each piece reflects on how these perceptions are shaped, using patterns pulled directly from male and female clothing to inform the surface decoration. These familiar textures act as a visual language, reinforcing or challenging traditional gender expectations.

I’m especially drawn to the ‘male’ version of the piece—the use of space, color, and pattern feels more resolved and successful in expressing the ideas behind the work.
